Chips Ahoy!/Sour Patch Kids

One of the things I don’t completely understand is the need to merge two completely different things by two completely different foods. I mean, can’t it be enough to leave good enough alone? One company that has started to expand beyond their comfort zone is Nabisco, owners of lucrative products such as the Oreo, Nilla Wafers, Wheat Thins, Sour Patch Kids and Chips Ahoy! It was the geniuses at Nabisco that began to combine their products together to make the Chips Ahoy!/Sour Patch Kids collaboration.

On April 23rd, 2020, Chips Ahoy! had a press release for their new cookie combination. It boasts of a standard Chips Ahoy! cookie with the chocolate chips replaced with a Sour Patch Kids chip variant. It was to come to stores in May with a limited edition release to the public. The company also hosted a virtual prom on May 23rd, 2020 with Steve Aoki (poor guy) in order to promote their new cookie nightmare.

Now, there was many speculating whether the product would contain actual pieces of Sour Patch Kids or if they were just going to have the chocolate chip variant that was on the cover of the container that it came in. In the end, people decided that the image didn’t point to any evidence that there were actual pieces of the gummy candy in the cookie, and it gave many hope that the combination wouldn’t be as bad as they thought.

How wrong they were.

Because of the COVID crisis that the world is facing, I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to get this cookie, but my mother’s husband was able to acquire them while out for groceries by asking the employees at the supermarket. Apparently because they were limited edition cookies, they were placed in a special location in the supermarket. One of the first things to notice about the package was that the design for the cookie has changed since its original debut in December of 2019. The original photo, provided by Instagram user @junkfoodleaks_, had a blurry photo of the cookie. It’s difficult to see if the chunks on the picture are actually Sour Patch Kids or if it is something else, so many people (myself included) thought that the cookie would lack the actual kids.

That is not the case in the new package. It has both the colorful chips as well as small chunks of the gummy confection in the cookie. Which I’m sure was a surprise to many people who were anticipating the cookie. I was surprised by the decision to put the chunks because it was a bold decision to make.

This package give me nightmares. The aesthetic is just off...

Nevertheless, when you open the packet of cookies, one thing that overcomes your senses is the smell of the cookie. It smelled like a bag of Sour Patch Kids… A smell that I welcome when I open a bag of the candy, but not so much when I was opening this packet. I think that the smell really threw me off because I thought that there would be a hint of vanilla (this was me assuming that the original cookie has vanilla in it).

I am a sucker for how the cookies were organized though.

Upon taking the first bite, I realized that the cookie had the gummy chunks in it. Which was an awful realization. It was seriously something that I wasn’t expecting because I wasn’t paying too much attention to the packaging. The next thing that I noticed was that the cookie was lacking in flavor itself. I think that it does have some hint of vanilla, but if it does, it isn’t really detectable.

Rethinking all the life decisions that led up to this moment...

Another thing to note is that the cookie itself isn’t very appetizing to look at. Just on aesthetic terms, it’s clear that it will be a crumbly cookie. I have not had a cookie disintegrate in my hands after taking one bite in a long time. And three out of three of these cookies did that while I was eating them for this review. It just doesn’t really feel good biting into it like most Chips Ahoy! cookies that I have had in the past.

After that, I was curious as to the flavor of the chip of the cookie itself, and that is something that actually shocked me. They managed to harness the flavor of the Sour Patch Kids into a small chip… Which made me even more confused as to why they would add the chunks of the Kids into the cookie. Seriously, I think that it would have been fine without the chunks if they added more of the chips. Adding the chunks of the candy was overkill.

Anyways, after eating three of these cookies, my stomach is very upset. So, that just speaks volumes about how much my body likes these cookies.

Final Rating: 4/10 It just tastes bad. I’m glad it’s limited edition, so it will be eradicated on this Earth soon.
