Shamrock Shake

One thing that I really wanted to try this year was the Shamrock Shake from McDonalds. In only just started to get into fast food in the past few years, and by the time it was 2019, I was ready to try different things on the menu. But last year I gave up sweet beverages for lent (because I tend to rely too much on those to give me energy in the day…), so I wasn’t able to drink the shake. It was technically on the menu until the middle of April, but they ran out of supplies before I could get it.

I feel like the Shamrock Shake is one of the more prolific items on the McDonald’s menu. I’ve never seen them not advertise it, and it seems like a very popular holiday item from what I’ve read online and from various friends. So, when I saw that they started serving the shake before March, I was excited (note that I did drink this in February… Sorry this is so late…).

Honestly, I wasn’t really planning on getting it, but after some encouragement from a friend (shout out to Alison), I decided to get the drink. However, to my surprise they were not only selling the Shamrock Shake, but they were also selling something called a Shamrock McFlurry in order to celebrate the 50th anniversary for the Shamrock Shake.

So, I got both. Which was a mistake because my friend and I had eaten a full meal only a few hours before we stopped by the McDonald’s. I should probably preface this with the fact that even though I had heard of the Shamrock Shake, I’ve never heard anything about what it tasted like, so I was in for a different surprise when it came to the flavor.

It does have the same hue as Nickelodeon slime...

I really shouldn’t have been surprised by the mint, but I was. Even still, it was just the mint flavor. I didn’t really experience anything else. It was a generic mint taste. After drinking a little bit, I was confused as to why this menu item was so popular. Was it because it was exclusive? Was that the only reason? I could understand it if it was maybe mint and something else, but just mint was disappointing. If someone could please let me know what the interest is in this menu item, I would be very interested to hear your side of the story, because I am just confused and saddened by that experience.

My disappointment is palpable.

After drinking that, I was much more interested in what the Shamrock McFlurry had to offer. Now, I’m not sure if they are going to offer them after this year, but it was by far the more superior of the two options. And it was mainly because of the addition of Oreos to the mint flavoring. If there was ever a match made in sweet flavor heaven, it has to be mint and chocolate.

The mixed the flavors so well together and it just allowed for the perfect medley of flavors inside the mouth. And the Oreos gave such a different texture profile to the mix that was greatly appreciated. I think that drinks are always better when they have a cronch factor.

I can concretely say that this was something worth waiting all year to come out. I mean, I’ve heard the Shamrock Shake being described in this manner. Something that you wait all year for, but I think that the title belongs to the McFlurry version. I hope that they will continue to give this item out in conjunction to the regular Shamrock Shake item in the future.

Final ratings:

Shamrock Shake  4/10; disappointing

Shamrock McFlurry  9/10
